Ann Rule on Mary Winkler

Famous crime writer Ann Rule is tackling the Mary Winkler case in her new book:

Rule did not attend the Winkler trial. Beverly Morrison of Henderson attended as a first-time researcher for her.

“I came away having a lot of questions that were never answered in court,” Morrison said. “I still don’t know how much abuse there was, if any, or if the murder was premeditated or an accident.

“Those are the two things that stick out to me that I still want to know,” she said.

She pointed out that Matthew Winkler’s autopsy indicated his bladder had 1,000 cc (cubic centimeters) of urine and was distended. Prosecutors argued that if he had gotten up to quiet their baby by covering the child’s mouth and nose - as Mary Winkler testified he did - then he would have gone to the bathroom before going back to bed.

“Did he ever get up that morning?” Morrison asked. “That’s one thing that’s always bothered me.”
