Rigging the lottery
Left of the Dial wonders, based on past history, whether it would be possible to rig the Tennessee Lottery system:
Rep. Jason Mumpower, R-Bristol, is determined to force the lottery to go back to using the balls, a system that inherently creates confidence because players can actually see the winning numbers as they appear. Computers invite suspicion.
But I found something that intrigued me. Back in 1980, the Pennsylvania Lottery faced a scandal when it was discovered that a nightly three–digit ping pong ball TV drawing in April of that year was rigged.
And what’s even more amazing is that the mastermind of the nefarious plan was a beloved local Pittsburgh announcer who hosted the drawings on the air.
Nick Perry of Pittsburgh’s WTAE-TV served two years in prison for the scheme that involved Perry’s business partners and the station’s art director.
