Anna Mae He - five months into her new life with her new (old) family
The Anna Mae He case is one of the sadder and stranger sagas in Tennessee legal history. But it’s over now, and the little girl has been living with her birth parents - her parents - for the past five months. The Memphis Commercial Appeal was granted fairly intimate access to the He family home [...]

Interesting AP story today about how the struggling former mill town of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. took a huge gamble on Randy Parton, Dolly’s brother, and how he appears to have let the folks down:
The future was looking bleak in this crossroads town just below the Virginia line. One by one, the textile mills closed. Thousands [...]

A New Year’s wish list for progressive Tennesseans
You’ll find the list here at the LiberalVoices blog. Item # 10 concerns the death penalty:
10. End to the Death Penalty - I will shed no tears for serial killer Paul Reid when he dies on Jan. 3. He is disgusting and evil. It is beyond my capacity to have sympathy for [...]
January 2007 - A look back
We’re counting down the past year’s top local stories at WBIR, starting with January.
January, 2007 saw the much-discussed Knox County Commission appointments and the even more widely discussed murders of Christopher Newsom and Channon Christian.

Ragsdale still supports Finch
While support for Cynthia Finch may be eroding on County Commission, Mayor Ragsdale’s camp apparently still has her back:
The spokesman for Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale, however, said Finch isn’t going anywhere.
“Based on everything we are aware of, there is nothing to suggest Cynthia has ever done anything for her personal gain,” Dwight Van [...]
Celebratory
Interestingly, in our highly unscientific poll at WBIR.com more folks say they celebrate Winter Solstice than Hannukah.

UPDATE: felons removed from Hillary’s Tennessee Steering Committee
An update to Monday’s story.
Apparently the Clinton campaign had second thoughts about a couple of the folks they picked to spearhead their efforts in the Volunteer State.
The original list of more than 100 committee members had included former state House Majority Leader Tommy Burnett and West Tennessee Democratic Party activist Gladys Crain.
Both are familiar [...]
Free for the takin’
“Freegans” live on next to nothing by using the food and other stuff the rest of us throw away.
(Who knew there was a word for this?)
Taken literally, “freegan” is a combination of “free” and “vegan,” meaning strict adherents don’t eat or use any sort of animal products. But the national movement is more broadly about [...]
A good heart
(Try to read this one without smiling…or feeling weepy)
One little girl who has been through a lot received a very special Christmas gift this week - her #1 Christmas wish:
Jordon Hensley of Kingston was thrilled just at the chance to spend Christmas at home with her family. A month prior, she received the gift of [...]
HWJV: How would Jesus vote?
Some say he’d go with the Libertarian ticket:
Dr. Rushdoony notes: “Western liberty began when the claim of the State to be man’s savior was denied. The State then, according to Scripture, was made the ministry of justice. But, wherever Christ ceases to be man’s Savior, there liberty perishes as the State again asserts its messianic [...]

So notes Volunteer Voters:
Republicans may lean towards fiscal responsibility (if only rhetorically) but Tennessee’s GOP Senate Leader is looking to put a bit of distance between his caucus and news that the state may be cutting services to the state’s mentally disabled because of a revenue shortfall.

One local preacher considers Festivus
He says the season is making him feel grinchy:
This time of year is great in so many ways, (Birth of Jesus and all), and so frustrating to me in just as many.
Most of my frustration has to do with cultural expectations that drag this wonderful time of Christmas down to a nauseating level. This expectation [...]

Romancing the youth vote
Jack Lail introduces us to MTV’s Tennessee-based citizen reporter, Dustin Ogdin.
Ogdin describes the project:
You asked what I hope to accomplish with the MTV Street team. My goal is to cover the issues that matter to young Tennesseans, especially young people of voting age. I am particularly interested in covering those issues that are [...]
