UPDATE:
Mr. Hornback says I got it wrong in quoting him here. Please be sure visit his blog to read how he says I got it wrong.
My original post:
Brian Hornback says Karen Carson’s recent trip to China looks like an ethical problem to him:
No elected official is permitted to accept a gift of more than $25 from a person, organization or entity. As citizens have began to examine the ethics policy and the behaviors of some elected officials, it has been brought to the attention of Brian’s Blog that School Board Chair Karen Carson has accepted such gifts that are in excess of the $25 maximum.
For example, she along with Assistant Superintendent Donna Wright accepted a trip to the country of China as a gift from the Peoples Republic of China. From the layman’s perspective, this trip is in violation of the literal policy.

She didn’t go on a luxury cruise. She took a business trip.
Katie: You got it wrong, not surprising by the way. I, Brian Hornback am NOT alleging anything.
This post uses sources. Not a first hand account or opinion of me. A correction is needed and demanded.
Well Katie, you’ve been “hornbacked!!”. Consider yourself among a good number of other great bloggers that have also been “hornbacked”. The fact that he “demanded” a correction gives you a few extra points! Keep up the good work, I really enjoy the blog roll.
well, andy dunn. If that is your real name. If you read my post in its entirity, not judt the snipit that Katie copy and pasted you will discover that it is a shoddy piece of blog reporting.
As for being “hornbacked” I didn’t even know that Katie had a blog until she did this “hit piece” on my blog. I understand why she did it. She needs traffic over here.
Just for the record, Hornback (and his sources) are wrong. I have not accepted any gifts greater than $25 in value. I did apply for and was awarded a GRANT to support an educational trip to China. Clearly there are tremendous differences between a gift and the awarding of a grant. My suggestion would be to come to me for questions about my service on the school board and to avoid Hornback. Over the past three years,”sources” tell me that there have been a number of inaccurate postings.
Thanks,
Karen
I agree with Karen over the past three years there have been alot of inaccurate postings here and on knoxviews and in the Slopper News.
There have not been any inaccurate postings at Brian’s Blog and our staff appreciate all of our readers and sources.
I for one don’t like Karan Carson. “THE BULLY” she is,or for what she has been towards the 5th dist. that she so-called represents. I don’t usually Ieave comments on blogs but with the tight budget times we are in right now, should we really be sending Mrs. Carson on a vacation to China? I know we need to get our kids ready to compete in a global economy but are we so pittiful that we don’t have the tools to teach that in the USA?
How was is process done? Did she apply on behalf of Knox County school board and use her position as chair? Who approved it? What happened to OPEN and PUBLIC government?
And by the way, if she does go. Guess who is paying–I don’t care if it is county, state, or federal TAX dollars - they are MY tax dollars.
I’ll be voting for Laurie Alford.
