Damning with faint praise

One of the topics that will be hotly debated in the upcoming state legislative session is whether grade standards for retaining the HOPE lottery scholarships should be lowered.

One lawmaker who supports dropping the GPA requirement is Greg Johnson, a Portland Democrat. Johnson’s son lost his HOPE scholarship at Volunteer State Community College last year because of his C average, and Rep. Johnson would like to see the GPA average requirement lowered below 3.0.

The fired-up legislator and loving dad says:

“Some students will always be C students,” Johnson said. “They will always be average. They’ll barely get by in school. They’ll barely get by in their job. But everybody should have a chance at a college education.”

  1. “Average” and “barely get by” are hardly the same thing.

Sounds more like “encouraging mediocrity” to me.

Scholarships are for the exceptionally performing and the capable but financially needy. The standard should remain 3.0. “B” is what is expected from college students. “C” students are below average in college.

I guess me need trash pick-up and ditch diggers, but damm, I don’t care about if a child is giviing his or her all, our children are our future and if it takes lowering to a 3.0. so be it. People don’t under stand is that WE are making the future of what we leave behind. We can’t take it with us! What gets to me is giving scholarships to “anything other than whites, no matter what the income or grade. Don’t get me wrong. It’s giving these scholarships to person other than a white family is getting , well I will not go there. But, I will say .. We are all past that! This not the 60s. We today are ” = “.
I’m sick of all these programs! and mad as hell when someone gets pass over because they meet the income level, but the child is white.
