Stepdad Man tells of The Boy’s recent squeaker of a loss in the 4-H public speaking contest:

After the short speeches were presented, we knew he only had one real competitor. It turned out to be the daughter of an old friend. Both of her parents are actors, so perhaps she’s got public speaking in her genes. But still, The Boy was right on par with her in his delivery. I know I’m biased, but really he did a great job. We could tell who the top three were. Not sure what point the judge split the hair on in his decision.

After the contest, the kids were all given paper to write thank-you notes to the 4-H organization (the sponsor). Before the contest, The Boy was quite confident. His mom had to tell him to stop declaring himself the winner already. So afterward, he was quite deflated. We watched him write his thank-you note for a minute, then his mom decided she’d better check that missive out before he turned it in. She only got a glimpse of it before he spirited it away to the official.

He wrote something to the effect of this: “Thank you for the opportunity to be in the speaking contest. I’m sorry that my speech was not up to you standards.” Yep, he apologized to the organization for not winning its competition. I’m not sure what the balance was on sarcasm-versus-humility.
