Being a child actor is hazardous to your health

Early, major Hollywood fame should come with a warning label.

Poor, young Brad Renfro.

Rosie O’Donnell’s blogging today about Britney Spears seems especially pognant now. She wrote:

At eight years old, she bravely stood before a microphone. By 17, she had sold 25 million records. Where were the sidewalk-skinned knees, the chalk stained hands, the monkey bars, the passed notes? A Disney set is not a childhood, no matter how many bright colors they use, or how cheerful the script.

I am not sure that being a child actor causes anything that’s not already in the make up of the person. If BR were a cop he could still have a heroin addiction. If BSpears was a drycleaning clerk she could still have an unstable manic depressive condition. I think blaming it on hollywood lifestyles and such is a reductionist theory that does not take into the account the way the person’s brain chemicals are needing adjusting.
