Knoxville has cheap apartments, but maybe not ones you would want to actually live in

Josh Flory points to a WSJ piece indicating Knoxville has some of the lowest apartment rental costs in the country, but a commenter on his blog says this doesn’t tell the whole story:

I’m not sure most folks would want to reside in an apartment here that costs below $700 for a two-bedroom.

I moved here in Feb. and was not impressed at all with the options for cheap apartments. It was downright scary in many places.

There were many more options in Roanoke, where I had lived before.

Here, it seems, there are a lot of ticky-tacky communities instead of unique apartment buildings, etc.
