Optimism in the face of chaos

Longtime political guy-in-the-know Mike Cohen says, despite all the recent shenanigans in Knox County, he remains excited and hopeful about this election season:

We’re less than a month from the Knox County primary election. Usually by now people who watch politics have a pretty good idea how things might go. But this is probably as unpredictable a local election as we’ve ever seen. The fallout from term limits, the Sunshine lawsuit, people being removed from office….its all combined to cause several things. First, we have more people registered to vote. That’s a good thing. Secondly, we have more candidates than ususal, many of them new to politics. That’s also a good thing. And who benefits from there being lots of candidates? Generally people with better name recognition…the incumbents. Of course in this case some of the incumbents aren’t actually in office.

It is an absolutely crazy year for politics in Knox County. Personally I’m optomistic about the outcome because I am a huge, huge believer in the voters. People are smart.

As discouraging as some of the recent events might see we all need to remember that Knox County has been around since 1792. We’ve had rough patches before and we will have them again. But we will get through it.
