State senators to tackle abortion issue today

A key debate is planned for Thursday:

All 99 members of the state House and half the Senate are up for re-election in November. Throw in an open seat for the presidency, and partisanship on Tennessee’s Capitol Hill is at a fever pitch.

The proposal would add language to the Tennessee Constitution saying that nothing in the document secures or protects the right to an abortion.

That could set the stage for Tennessee to someday ban abortion if Roe vs. Wade were to be overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. Roe vs. Wade is the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion 35 years ago.

The Republican-led amendment to the state Constitution has passed the Senate before, most recently in 2006, but was stopped in a House subcommittee.

Democrats are preparing a counter move to the Republican-led measure, and plan to propose an amendment today to protect abortions in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of a mother.
