UPDATED: John Edwards out today?
Apparently that was the speculation on NPR this morning.
My guess is that he’s not ready to bow out.
UPDATE: I was wrong. CNN is reporting he’s out

Disillusioned with the GOP
View from the Porch says the current crop of candidates are all a bunch of “losers”
This is the eight presidential contest since I’ve been sentient enough to really understand them, and I have to say that it’s official: devolution happens. What else can I call it when I find myself pining for a Dole or [...]

The worldwide mid-life crisis
Apparently, people the world over grow somewhat depressed in their 40s:
“It happens to men and women, to single and married people, to rich and poor, and to those with and without children,” Oswald said. “Nobody knows why we see this consistency.
One possibility may be that people realize they won’t achieve many of their aspirations at [...]
Not the right helper for the job
Lori says cats aren’t any good for some things:
Do *NOT* trust a cat who wants to help you restring a mandolin. Take my word for it.

Fred Thompson: what happened?
That’s what George Korda is asking:
As the Draft Fred talk grew, Thompson showed well in national polls. Without declaring his candidacy he nevertheless shot to the top of the speculation ladder.
He separated himself from his rivals by announcing his candidacy on Jay Leno’s “Tonight” show on the same evening other Republican presidential candidates were holding [...]

Read More..>>Bush opens up about his “addiction” to alcohol
As his presidency draws to a close, George Bush seems increasingly more willing to talk openly about his long-rumored personal addiction issues:
The president told a group of former prisoners in Baltimore today that he “drank too much at one time” in his life, going as far as calling it an “addiction.” He told the group [...]
And I nominate for the East Tennessee Darwin Awards…
…these fellas:
Some Carter County inmates who dropped in on their jail administrator’s office are now charged with attempting escape. Chad Louis Royal, Jerry Lee Tolley and Cody Brent Ingram were charged with felony escape and vandalism.
Jail Administrator Bobby Huffman says the three men allegedly climbed up to the ceiling crawl space from their cell and [...]
The Aegean Stable that is Knox County government
Adam Groves has written an excellent summary of the entire Knox County political saga of 2007, concluding with:
With the new faction on the Commission now removed, the Commission wisely opted to delay another appointment process until after this year’s primary elections – when it learned that the Commission could not authorize a special election. Instead, [...]
What might this mean for “Led Zeppelin plays Bonnaroo” rumors?
Page says Led Zeppelin is ready to do a world tour…but not ’til September:
Page says the amount of work they put into their reunion show in December in London was what they would normally put into a world tour anyway.
That show featured Page, Plant, bassist-keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer Jason Bonham, son of late [...]
Party on the golf course to remain in full swing
The state AG says golf courses can keep on keepin’ on with alcohol sales:
Oak Ridge resident Delisa Simpson-Schubert sought an opinion about the legality of beer sales at golf courses.
Simpson-Schubert was teed off by drunken golfers urinating near her house by the 18th hole at Tennessee Centennial Golf Course. She lives with her husband and [...]
“Country Club” Republicans lining up behind McCain?
That’s what David Oatney thinks:
I have a tremendous amount of personal respect for Howard Baker-it is hard not to admire the man who did more than anyone else in the modern era to bring the GOP to Statewide electability here. He also served as President Reagan’s Chief of Staff, and there are very few of [...]
Lumpy Lambert calls Mark Harmon names during Commission meeting
I am catching up this morning on what happened at last night’s commission meeting, and this caught my eye:
When the discussion turned to the issue of county employees serving on County Commission, Commissioner Mark Harmon proposed letting the people decide or failing that a common sense approach regarding commissioners voting on their own salaries and [...]
Bill Clinton’s squandered legacy?

Eli Manning: the inscrutable underdog
They’re pyschoanalyzing the lesser-known Manning in New York Magazine:
He’s got the arm—but does he have the guts? Can you possibly grow up as the son of one famous quarterback and the little brother of another and not be a massive head case? Would he flourish or implode under the searing glare of New York’s demanding [...]
Your money or your time
Mamatried ponders life balance (and I hope she’ll let me know what the answer is when she gets it figured out ):
I can’t help be envious of friends whose husbands make 6 figure incomes (like my prenatal yoga pal who is in grad school but is married to a computer systems analyst so [...]
Read More..>>American candidates as transformers
No, no, not the kind that turn into giant, battling robots.
This kind:
We live in a culture of amazing personal transfigurations, a culture run by Oprah Winfrey and the latest James Frey, in which each story of personal pain and degradation ends with a caterpillar-to-butterfly blossoming into spiritual fulfillment. That these stories are simplistic and superficial [...]
