Rep. Campfield’s altered state
Terry Frank points to a piece in the Memphis Flyer about Knoxville Rep. Stacey Campfield’s proposed legislation barring educators from any mention of homosexuality in elementary and middle schools. It’s a fair enough topic for a newspaper to cover. But what isn’t fair is what the newspaper did to the photo of Campfield they ran to accompany the article:
The folks at the Memphis Flyer digitally altered the photograph of Rep. Campfield. The original photograph of Campfield shows him holding a sign that reads “tax and spend” up behind then candidate for Governor Phil Bredesen.
The Flyer altered the photograph to depict that Campfield was holding a sign reading “confederate values.”
If you go look at the photo (which Terry Frank has posted at her blog), you will see that it looks real; it looks like Campfield is actually holding up a sign promoting “confederate values.” This isn’t a clearly satirical editorial cartoon; it’s an actual photo that has been doctored to create confusion in the people who see it.
I’m with Terry Frank. This was Not An Okay Thing for a legitimate newspaper to do.
