Hillary Clinton’s past comes back to bite her in Tennessee

Back in 1993, when Jim Cooper was a young(er) Congressman (with a very deep family political legacy that would be valuable for any presidential candidate wanting to win Tennessee to tap into) representing Tennessee’s 4th district, and Hillary Clinton was the First Lady with a health plan to get passed, they had an exchange:

David Brooks explains:

On June 15, 1993, Cooper met with Clinton to discuss their differences. Clinton was “ice cold” at the meeting, Cooper recalls. “It was the coldest reception of my life. I was excoriated.”

Cooper told her that she was getting pulled too far to the left. He warned that her plan would never get through Congress. Clinton’s response, Cooper now says, was: “We’ll crush you. You’ll wish you never mentioned this to me.”

Today, Jim Cooper is a slightly older Tennessee congressman, now representing a different district, and he’s supporting Barack Obama for president.
