Men on a marriage strike

Posted By katie allison granju

Dr. Helen says men are increasingly avoiding marriage because they’ve done a cost-benefit analysis and have found the institution lacking:

…men are on a marriage strike, not necessarily because they are perpetual adolescents or avoiding deep attachments to others but because the reward for being an adult in our society is so low, especially for men.

It’s really simple Psychology 101 (or Economics 101) — make something negative enough and people will avoid it, make it positive, and more people will engage in that particular behavior.

Nowadays, for many men, the negatives of marriage for men often outweigh the positives. Therefore, they engage in it less often. Not because they are bad, not because they are perpetual adolescents, but because they have weighed the pros and cons of marriage in a rational manner and found the institution to be lacking for them. It’s a sensible choice for some and the video games, magazines, and humor websites that Hymowitz disses are a way to fill one’s time with fun activities that don’t tell you that you suck, are an “unfinished person,” emotionally detached or on your way to jail for fake domestic violence charges. People used to treat men better than this.

And they asked me whats a marriage strike, when I gave them the statistics & one girl just gave a wimpering voice & said,I’m not worried as if I destroyed her self esteem. I didn’t mean to!

What man in his right mind would tie to knot this day and age! Well after refusing to mary for 38 years, I found a good foreign woman and I said what the heck lets do it. I found nothing there for me so I divorced her after 3 years ( thank God she lives abroad). I think marriage should be destroyed. Its only purpose is to enslave men to society. Give it to the Gay and Lesbian community if they want it, but a think they are going to hate us for that several decades down the road. I rather work hard, keep my money, and travel abroad. If society thinks that men need a wife, kids, big homes, and the ensuing financial slavery, they are mistaken. We don’t need any of those headaches. I was happier and financially free before marriage and after I divorced a very good woman. I work 9 months out of the year and spend 3 months on vacation in South America during the winter and with no credit. I have money stashed in the car, at the office at home and the bank. Have a big home in Brazil and small apartment here. What esle can I ask. More Headaches? Naa.

Its about time the thought of marriage today is scary. Im 38yrs with a great job and I own rental houses. I intend to enjoy my money with no hassles whatsoever, the family law system truly sucks.

A man would have to be insane to get married today. The law is completely disrespectful to men and their rights as human beings.

If a man loses his job due to the current global financial disaster and all the downsizing going on with it, he can be put in jail with no trial for being a “deadbeat dad”. Aren’t debtor prisons illegal?

Men get no visitation rights in divorce. Lose most of their wealth and assets. Have to pay alimony — what happen to equality?

I’m 34, and I’ll never marry because I’ve seen what divorce and the court system does to men. Just because I own a penis, doesn’t make me the bad guy. Since the government doesn’t get that, I’m on strike for life. If I ever have kids, it will be through one-night stands. It’s just safer that way.

Simple reason why men shouldn’t marry women: Women are shrews.

I think it is in the nature of women to do what they can get away with. I don’t really consider them brilliant, I think when the system laws empower them and they are correct without being correct they loose respect for men. I find the poorer the country the more appreciation there is for men.
