That’s the premise of this profile in Politico:

Last year, Alexander angered conservatives by embracing a nonbinding timetable for withdrawal from Iraq — basically adopting the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group that had been rejected by the Bush administration. He says he’d have to back off that idea now that he’s in leadership.

“It would be hard to take as a leadership position,” Alexander admitted. “I’ll have my same independent ideas. … I’ll just be preaching more inside the church rather than on the street corner.”
