I see today that federal authorities have discovered that the Katrina evacuees living in FEMA trailers who have been claiming unexplained illnesses were, in fact, not a bunch of displaced hypochondriacs:
Long after the Federal Emergency Management Agency denied there was a problem, federal health officials are urging that hurricane victims be moved out of FEMA-supplied trailers as quickly as possible because of a health threat.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says tests on more than 500 trailers and mobile homes in Louisiana and Mississippi found dangerous levels of formaldehyde fumes. Levels averaged about five times the exposure in a normal house, and in some trailers, they were nearly 40 times worse than normal.
One of the primary suppliers of these trailers was Maryville-based Clayton Homes; the company received government contracts in the tens of millions of dollars to build them.
It will be interesting to see whether the defective trailers are traced back to particular builders and if so, what liability issues there may be.
AN UPDATE: FEMA assures that trailers for Tennessee tornado victims will be safe
Bad Behavior has blocked 740 access attempts in the last 7 days.
Getting angry at the manufacturers is reasonable and it should be traced back to them and they should be caused to apologize, make reparations, and make sure their industry can’t do this in the future. But I’m missing the part where you get angry because the government’s solution is not to destroy the trailers but to take those same formaldehyde-laden FEMA trailers and foist them off on American Indian reservations.
