GPS locator collars for pets:

Frankewich said the product works this way: An owner sets up a home zone in which the dog is allowed to roam. Once the animal leaves that zone, the owner will be alerted automatically by e-mail or a telephone call.

According to Rick Seltzer, a senior engineer, people then will be able to track their lost dogs’ location either on their computer by going to the PetSafe Web site or by calling the customer-care center while they are driving around looking for the dog.

Frankewich said the 7.4-ounce collar, which came out late last year, is designed for dogs 30 pounds or heavier. The technology is not available to make them small enough for some breeds, he said.
