A farewell to Cynthia Finch
Larry Van Guilder ponders Finch’s departure:
To many, Finch had come to represent everything they despised about the Ragsdale administration. Recently she accused certain local media outlets of racism and sexism in their coverage of her travails. Then, for good measure, she tossed in the Knox County Commission.
How sincere she was in playing the race and gender cards only Finch knows. But enough evidence has surfaced (P-card abuses, handling Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority business on county time, conflicts of interest in the community grants program) to suggest her code of ethics might not be everything one would hope for in a person with the power she held in county government.
Many were offended by what they considered Finch’s arrogance. Yet she is certainly no more arrogant than Mayor Ragsdale’s former finance director, John Werner. And if you want to argue that she’s cockier than the Mayor himself you had better pack your lunch – you’re in for a tough sell.
Five to three says Finch does not go gently into that good night, and the betting windows are now open. She lawyered up last year when she felt the heat of public indignation over P-card extravagances and travel allowances, but so did other members of the Mayor’s staff, including Dwight Van de Vate, who famously announced at a commission meeting that he would not answer questions on the advice of counsel.
