New RNC delegate wants to do more at national level
John Ryder says Van Hilleary wasn’t making the most of his RNC position:
The Memphis lawyer who successfully challenged Van Hilleary for a spot on the Republican National Committee says he will be more active than the former congressman and gubernatorial candidate.
John Ryder won election to the four-year term by the state party’s executive committee over the weekend by one vote. He previously served on the RNC from 1996 to 2004.
Ryder, 59, says during his earlier stint he made the successful bid for Memphis to host the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in 2006 and served on the party’s rules committee for presidential primary scheduling.
“I felt like more could be done with the job than was being done,” said Ryder, who was not eligible to seek another term in 2004. “My sense was that Van was not as engaged in the nation level.”
