An unhappy goodbye from a really fine Knoxville journalist

Posted By katie allison granju

Barry Henderson - who is one of Knoxville’s journalistic treasures - offers his farewell to Metro Pulse in a column today. I was very, very sorry to read that it appears Barry is leaving not because he’s ready to retire, but because since Scripps bought MP, he’s getting the axe as a budget-cutting measure:

This is my last week at Metro Pulse, and it’s not a happy time. It’s a product of stresses on Metro Pulse’s budget and priorities in a period where publications all over America are under duress blamed on the drizzly climate that’s befallen the overall economy. A lot of other people are losing jobs they’ve loved. No matter how it’s explainable, and however I’m able to rationalize it, it’s sad.

I hope that Metro Pulse’s (and Scripps’) loss will be someone else’s gain, and that Barry will end up writing somewhere else - where I can read and enjoy his fine reporting and commentary for many years to come.
