A puzzling pro-developer bias on Knox MPC?

Posted By katie allison granju

LVG thinks so:

But MPC is even more vexing than County Commission. The 15 people on MPC aren’t elected, they aren’t paid, so why the obvious developer bias month after month? Often enough, this body ignores the recommendations of the MPC staff - who are paid - if doing so will cause hardship to a developer.

It’s high time the mayors of Knoxville and Knox County appointed a few pro-neighborhood folks to MPC. There still may be time to save a ridgetop or two around here.

Due to an unfortunate quirk in state law (or an unfortunate interpretation of said law), neither mayor’s appointments to the MPC are confirmed by their respective legislative boides. It flies in the face of the intent of the city’s (and I assume the county’s) charter. In the case of the city, the same situation also exists with the KCDC board.

Actually, describing the situation as unfortunate is probably understating the problem. It’s not the fault of the current mayors, as it’s a situation that existed long before either of them took office. That said, no mayor should be able to make any appointments of this gravity without the confirmation of the legislative body.
