Woodson backs Bredesen

Sen. Jamie Woodson is standing with Gov. Bredesen on pre-K funding:

Bredesen’s $25 million proposal would expand pre-kindergarten funding by about 250 classrooms statewide, with an emphasis on broadening the program to include middle-class children.

The Senate Education Committee, made up of five Republicans and four Democrats, is due to review the pre-K proposal and other education spending plans on Wednesday. A survey of committee members by The Tennessean found that all four Democrats would vote to support the pre-K funding, and at least one Republican, Chairwoman Jamie Woodson of Knoxville, supports keeping the funds in the budget.

Woodson said she was concerned about the overall health of the state economy, and wants to discuss broader education priorities in the state, but would not vote to strip the budget of the $25 million.

“I would not support withdrawing that or cutting that out of the governor’s budget recommendation proposal,” she said.
