The mayor is retiring

The mayor of Memphis, that is.

Via Mister Turnbow:

The seventeen year incumbent Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton announced he’s retiring today effective July 31 2008. This comes as a shocker to many. Herenton became the first black Mayor in the history of Memphis in ‘91. In the commercial appeal he’s reported to be considering a run for schools superintendent or a run against Congressman Steve Cohen in the upcoming democrat primary. But I doubt if that will happen. Herenton seems to be in a small group of deep south big city black mayors who are under investigation by the FBI for corruption. Its no secret that Herenton,Larry Langford in Birmingham,Frank Melton in Jackson and Ray Nagin in New Orleans have had the FBI nipping at their heels now for a few months.
