Can UT crash through basketball’s glass ceiling?
That’s the question fans are asking today, before the big game:
The closest the Vols have come to making a regional final was last year when they led Ohio State by 20 points in the first half and by 17 at halftime but ultimately lost 85-84.
“That game taught us that no matter how many points you get up, you’ve got to keep playing. It’s never over,” Vols senior guard JaJuan Smith said.
Asked how long it took for him to get over the effects of that collapse, Smith said: “I’m still not over it.”
Before that, the 2000 Vols were seven points ahead of North Carolina with less than five minutes remaining in the Sweet 16, only to lose 74-69. Afterward, then-coach Jerry Green said the Vols’ late fade was due, in part, to “dementia of the game.”
