Bob Tuke: grifter candidate?

Posted By katie allison granju

Over at The Nashville Scene, Jeff Woods makes the extremely cynical case that Bob Tuke’s nascent Senate campaign is really just a hustle:

I’ve never been a big fan of Lamar Alexander, and I’m all for competitive elections. But it’s hard to resist the temptation to see Bob Tuke’s campaign as a scam. Here’s a guy with absolutely zero chance to win who’s going to trick and shame and guilt-trip Democrats into giving him a $1 million or more. And to what end? So Tuke’s handlers–who include Fletcher, Rowley and the fundraiser Cathy Thomas–can earn a little cash.

If Tuke or anyone else wanted to make a serious run against Alexander, they needed to start doing it much, much earlier. At this point, his campaign is a joke, except as a small moneymaker for political operatives.

But Sean Braisted disagrees (and so do I):

Of course, you could use Jeff Woods’ line of reasoning for just about any campaign/candidate which shows little chance of victory (Mark Penn sure as hell doesn’t want Hillary’s campaign to end anytime soon), and there is probably a grain of truth to that argument (at least for the people who work for with those campaigns), but I don’t think Tuke would be running if he didn’t see either a possibility of winning, or the chance to boost his reputation and possibly transfer that to another race down the line.

Everyone knows that just filing to run is great advertising. I believe Mr. - sorry, LT. Tuke is sincere about what he says, but unless there’s an immense coattail effect or some accident, he doesn’t have a chance.

Interesting that his main opponent has the same relationship with Sen. Clinton as Lt. Tuke does with Sen. Obama.
