Confronting Muslim stereotypes via You Tube
According to the AP, Jordan’s glamorous young Queen Rania has hit the interwebs with her quest to combat negative Muslim sterotypes:
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Jordan’s Queen Rania has launched an appeal on YouTube for a global dialogue to dismantle stereotypes of Muslims and the Arab world, the royal palace said Monday.
Her YouTube page invites viewers to give their opinions of the Middle East and talk about stereotyped images that they may have of Arabs and Muslims.
In a palace statement, Rania says she wants young people “to know the places and faces and rituals and culture that shape the part of the world I call home.”
YouTube is popular among Jordanian youth, who make up more than half of the country’s population of nearly 6 million. There is also easy access to the Internet, unlike in some parts of the region, such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Syria.
So I decided to go check it out:
She says most westerners get their info about Muslims via “‘24 and Jack Bauer,” and she solicits questions from anyone and everyone about Muslim stereotypes. Some of the questions being asked are pretty tough. It will be interesting to see whether she actually answers any of the hard ones.
Interesting.
