Congrats to Michael Silence

A favorite East Tennessee blogger and journalist has a new (media) gig:

For more than 26 years, my duties have been aimed at the print product. Come May 5, that’ll change. I’ll be moving to the editorial page to focus primarily on online. More specifically, this blog. I will also be doing a weekly column for the print product on blogs and blogging, and we’re going to play around with melding letters to the editor with online. Additionally, I’ll have some administrative duties with the editorial page but I will not be involved in editorial decision making. I’m delighted with the move and I like the way this newspaper has embraced blogs, bloggers and online. This move reinforces that commitment. Hang around. It should be fun.

I really admire the way Mr. Silence, with his long and very distinguished career as a traditional print newspaper reporter, has jumped right into online journalism and newsroom blogging, leading the way for a lot of up-and-coming journalists in our region, and showing his same-age colleagues how its done, and done right. A lot of mid and late-career journalists today talk about how their jobs are “going away.” That doesn’t have to be the case if you are willing to evolve and create new opportunities in new platforms, as he has done.
