New media goodness in Knoxville

Wow. Check out how great the new Knoxville Voice website looks.

It has all kinds of snazzy new features, as well as some great bloggers, including Julie Auer, who pens “The Happy Humanist.”

As I live near Julie, I love this spot-on description from her blog of our little section of K-town:

I like my funky part of town: its quirky foot traffic (on what other main drag in Knoxville do you see as many pedestrians, and all of whom look like they could hang out with JJ Cale?); its slapped-up indie business storefronts; its slow, could-give-a-damn flow of automobile traffic.

There’s nothing like it in springtime, a fact I was reminded of yesterday when a souped-up Chevy truck rolled past my car with its windows rolled down, thumping Mexican polka music, with a driver whose Hispanic obviousness would piss off the staid rednecks of some parts of town. But Broadway rednecks yield and mind their own business. I am a very white, liberal aesthete who prefers the rednecks of North Knoxville to the rednecks of any other part of town. I can defend that distinction any time.
