Too broke to get divorced

Posted By katie allison granju

A piece in today’s Memphis Daily News details how court filings are way down this year.

This echoes what a prominent Knoxville family law attorney told me recently about the dip in his own business in the past six months. He says the economy is so bad right now that people literally can’t afford to get divorced. They can’t afford the up-front retainer for a divorce lawyer, or the apartment for the other spouse to move into when he/she leaves the marital home, etc, etc, etc.

  1. Debra said,

I had to borrow $300 from a professor and used it as a retainer (yes, I had a hard time getting an attorney, but a good one took my case because she knew when the divorce was over, I’d be in better financial standing.)

I siphoned $400 from marital bank account to pay 1/2 of first month/last month rent.

I had to dip heavily into some of my personal IRAs and an immature CD.

I sold music back to Disc Exchange and books to McKay’s.

Without all of the above, and gifts of housewares and moral support from co-workers and friends - I would have never made it. And my leaving was under emergency circumstances. I’m very, very grateful to be free and safe.
