An interesting story out of the Memphis Commecial Appeal today reveals that both Shelby and Davidson counties have exceptionally high incarceration rates:

The study, “Jailing Communities: The Impact of Jail Expansion and Effective Public Safety Strategies,” identified national trends, including a 21 percent increase in jail populations between 2001 and 2006. The number of people in jail has nearly doubled since 1990, it said.

The Shelby County jail population Thursday was 2,442. Shelby’s third-place ranking compared the jail population to the county’s population based on 2006 figures. Nashville-Davidson County ranked second behind only Philadelphia.
