Ummm…except McCain isn’t actually coming to Knoxville next week

Kleinheider links to a press release from the state Democratic Party today attempting to make some hay with John McCain’s just-announced “Forgotten Parts of America” tour:

Sen. McCain’s self-described “Forgotten Parts of America” tour was reported in USA Today as intending to reach out “to African Americans, displaced factory workers, and people living in poverty.” McCain will appear in Knoxville on Tuesday, April 22.

Hmmm, I thought after reading this. I can’t recall hearing anything about McCain coming to town next week, so I went and checked out the USA Today article cited in the press release, finding no mention of any visit to Knoxville. But maybe the state Democratic party is confused about where Knoxville is located? Because the USAT piece did say McCain would be visiting some other places in the region:

Starting Monday, the presumptive GOP nominee for president will stop in Alabama’s “Black Belt,” then move on to the struggling steel town of Youngstown, Ohio, and the Appalachian region of Kentucky. The Arizona senator is also trying to make it to New Orleans, which is still recovering from 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

“I want to tell people living there that there must not be any forgotten parts of America, any forgotten Americans,” McCain told newspaper editors this week.

No mention of Knoxville there.

So I called McCain spokesperson Jeff Sadosky, who said nope, there are no plans for McCain to visit Knoxville in the forseeable future.

Not surprisingly, the state Democratic party got it wrong,” he added.

UPDATE: Tennessee Democratic Party Spokesman Wade Munday says this article from the Knoxville News Sentinel indicates a McCain Knoxville stop next week.

McCain’s campaign told the Knoxville News Sentinel on March 4, 2008 that they would be in the state in April,” Munday said. “Apparently, the McCain campaign isn’t sticking to its word.”

If the Tennessee Democrat Party is confused as to where Knoxville is, thinking it is part of Alabama or Kentucky, perhaps that explains why East Tennessee generally votes for Republicans.
