Parkey Strader: “I plan to be there unless I can’t walk”
Georgiana Vines has an update on the Knox County legislator’s cancer battle:
State Rep. Parkey Strader, a Republican who represents the 14th District in West Knox County, is undergoing chemotherapy at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., for new spots that have shown up on tests for liver cancer.
Diagnosed in July 2006, he has had multiple surgeries and treatments to control the disease.
The spots showed up in tests locally about three weeks ago. He said he sent the results to his oncologist at the Mayo Clinic and also had some more tests there.
“So far, the side effects haven’t been bad,” Strader said of his treatment.
He has missed about 2 1/2 weeks of the legislative session but stays in touch with his staff and fellow legislators, he said.
The Legislature will have mostly committee meetings until Bredesen presents a budget reduction plan for 2008-09 to a joint meeting of the House and Senate on May 12.
“I plan to be there unless I can’t walk,” Strader said Friday. He earlier announced that he would not seek re-election this year.
