They’re (almost) baaaaack!
The cicadas are coming! The cicadas are coming!
When the soil 4 inches below the Earth’s surface reaches 67 degrees, the cicadas will appear by the thousands, and then some.
“We will probably see quite a large emergence this year,” said David Cook, of the University of Tennessee Extension Service of Davidson County. “People are terrified of them, but they are harmless, and can’t sting and can’t bite. They are just nuisances.”
May 1998 was the last time the winged, grasshopper-like insects swarmed over Tennessee. That was the 13-year species, which is common in the southeastern United States, according to the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service.
The 17-year species - expected this month - is more common in the northern states, but they do reach as far south as Tennessee.
