Media not being Niceley in explaining school super legislation
David Oatney isn’t happy with the way one media outlet explained legislation that Oatney supports:
I happened to be listening to WIVK News this morning and heard a Knox County School Board Member complain that Representative Frank Niceley’s attempt to allow for elected Schools Superintendents was somehow underhanded because Niceley is using the amendment process to push the appropriate legislation. There is nothing below the board about Frank attempting to go about it in this way-Democrats do it all the time, and Republicans frequently use the procedure to get good legislation a hearing, because they can’t get good hearings in Democrat-dominated House committees.
What I found most disturbing were two things-the school board member that I heard (pardon me for not recalling her name) basically said the school board does a fine job selecting a superintendent-as though the electorate would do a terrible job. Secondly, WIVK reported this story in such a way as to leave the listener with the impression that Niceley’s proposal only impacts Knox County. In reality, any county in the State could elect their Superintendent provided the conditions in the legislation are met. Frank Niceley represents far more of Jefferson County than Knox County, and the idea of electing the Superintendent of Schools is very popular in Jefferson County. Of course, Niceley couldn’t possibly be doing this because his constituents are demanding it-not to hear the press tell it.
