Walters State - World Series bound with local boys
Steve Phillips blogs about the team’s Very Good Year, and wonders why UT didn’t snap these players up:
What’s really noticeable is the local talent on the Walters State roster, especially the names of Chad Bell and Cody Hawn. Hawn had signed with Arkansas, but was going to have to sit out a year because of an injury and chose Walters State instead.
I was told by a follower of South-Doyle baseball that neither player was recruited hard by Tennessee, which puzzled me at the time. Then there’s Seymour’s Kyle Koeneman, who had 50 homers in high school and has added 28 more in his first year at Walters State.
Hey, I’m the last guy who’ll try to do a scout’s job; I thought Jabari Davis would be the second coming of Jamal Lewis.
Maybe they were late bloomers, although all three were All-State and recruited by other schools; maybe there was a mutual lack of interest, I don’t know.
Whatever the reason, there are eight players on the Walters State roster who grew up a relay throw from Lindsey Nelson Stadium, and some of them will be mentioned in next month’s Major League Draft. That makes you happy if you’re a Senators’ fan. It makes you scratch your head if you’re a Tennessee fan.
