He’s decided to get tough with the Democrats on this issue of lon-unapproved TVA nominees (including Knoxvillian Susan Williams) by blocking an appoinyment to something called “The Institute of Peace” (can anyone tell me what that is?)
Alexander has blocked an appointment to the Institute of Peace in an attempt to force Reid to allow reappointment of Bishop William Graves of Memphis and Susan Williams of Knoxville. Senators are allowed to put individual “holds” on appointments.
“I have run out of options in my dealing with the Democratic leader of the Senate,” Alexander said Friday. He talked with Reid, wrote him letters and spoke about the issue on the Senate floor. “I dislike these sort of tactics,” he said Alexander said of his move.
The terms of Graves and Williams expired late last year. Reid said in a letter to Alexander last month that he was holding up the nomination because he wanted a Democrat appointed to the TVA board.
“TVA is our secret weapon in our energy crisis. It needs to have a full board,” Alexander said. “We wouldn’t send a football team on the field with 10 players.”
UPDATE: It appears Sen. Alexander also blocked some substantially more meaningful appointments as well.
Bad Behavior has blocked 481 access attempts in the last 7 days.
Wow, what testosterone. I guess the red flannel shirt will be coming out of mothballs next.
