Tank Strickland fires back
Anthony Welsch notes a sharp exchange that took place at last night’s Knox County Commission meeting between Commission Chairman Tank Strickland and a fired-up resident seeking Ragsdale’s ouster:
At one point, a petitioner, Patti Walker says she spent her Memorial Day weekend gathering petitions and fighting for honest government while many people were boating and having [...]

Sociopolitical Sundown
A commenter in the WBIR.com community says:
The music has been okay, but I hate fighting the mass of humanity shoehorned into Market Square. Plus, an event like this always seems to draw out those people who want to make a spectacle of themselves, e.g., political campaigners, anti-war protestors, crusaders for cannabis, etc. I wish they [...]

“Club for Growth” targets Alexander
Apparently some group of climate change-deniers calling themselves “Club for Growth” is gearing up to go after Senator Alexander:
With $250,000 in radio and television spots, the Club for Growth is targeting Republican Sens. Alexander and Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina and Democratic Sens. Robert Byrd and Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Max Baucus and [...]

Fourth and Gill vs. Farragut: who pays more toward our schools?
Matt Edens argues (in addressing a blog post from Brian Hornback), that folks living in the city’s revitalized city neighborhoods are likely paying more than their share of taxes toward the stellar schools that exist far outside those same neighborhoods:
At least Hornback doesn’t trot out the tired old “yes, but folks in Farragut pay more [...]
Dwight Van de Vate speaks
Just about every week, I call Dwight Van de Vate to ask whether he or someone else from Mayor Ragsdale’s administration will appear on Inside Tennessee, and every week he very politely declines.
So I’m happy to at least be able to feature this interview with Mr. Van de Vate here at Knoxville Talks today.

When is a murderer an “alleged” murderer?
That’s the question WBIR reporter Anthony Welsch is asking in his blog today:
This week, I’m working on Paul House coverage. He has a hearing scheduled Wednesday in Nashville, everyone involved seems to think he has a fantastic chance of being released from death row/prison.
So, here’s the big ethical and journalistic question I have for [...]

Rob Curley is packin’ up and headin’ out west
Rob Curley, who recently came to Knoxville and got a bunch of us East Tennessee new media types all fired up (I am actually still digesting his presentation, and keep remembering things he said that I want to try) is leaving The Washington Post for the less green hills of Las Vegas.

You know, when I make a spelling or grammar mistake like this in a headline - and I do - I can just go back and quickly fix it, because I work online. But once the newspaper goes to press, one’s headline mistake is memorialized for all eternity.

Still under the weather
Whatever the bug my husband and I caught late last week is (and that kept us totally sick and in bed all weekend) seems to still be lingering for me. Again today I am running a fever after feeling a lot better yesterday. So I am trying to get some work done from home, but [...]

Imagine having to get a government certificate in order to obtain permission to have another baby after losing your only child to natural disaster.
From the AP:
XANXIAN, China (AP) — Many of the earthquake disaster victims in central China were children. And, because of the country’s one-child policy, many of them left behind no siblings.
