He apparently hasn’t been to Knoxville in a while…
A funny exchange between Cathy and the family patriarch:
Grandaddy: “Gay Street? There’s nothing on Gay Street.”
Me: “There are restaurants, shops, a high-tech arcade, a movie theater . . . ”
Grandaddy: “No. Downtown is a dive. Nobody goes there. What are your plans for when your brothers are visiting?”
Me: “I thought we’d see if the fountains [...]

“Rastus Baker”
Knoxville Voice tracks down a modern day, East Tennessee moonshine runner (going by an assumed name):
Rastus Baker,* a Tennessee runner, estimates that he makes $30,000 per year running moonshine. He has a day job as well, but running liquor supplements his main income.
Baker has been a runner since he was 17. He owns a small [...]
But Hillary has made the same comment about the RFK assassination before
So it turns out that Hillary Clinton has previously referenced RFK’s assassination in making the point she was apparently trying to make the other day: that traditionally, Democratic primary fights have gone on into the summer months.
“Primary contests used to last a lot longer,” she told Time magazine on March 6. “We all remember [...]
Woe is I
I never blog as much on the weekends, but my total and complete absence from Knoxville Talks this weekend is due to the fact that Jon, one of the children and I have been completely wallopped by some nasty virus. I have been sooooooooo sick for the past 48 hours.
I seem to be turning the [...]
How would you spend $3 trillion?
Brave New Films has set up a pretty clever viral, online anti-war site, which allows people to go on a virtual $3 trillion spending spree:
The occupation of Iraq will cost $3 trillion, America’s most expensive conflict since WWII.
Can YOU spend that money better?
Here’s your chance to go on a virtual $3 trillion shopping spree and [...]
“Is it worse to do something really terrible? Or something really terrible you actually believe?”
That’s the money question in John Cusack’s new movie, War, Inc. It looks a bit like Grosse Pointe Blank (one of my all-time fave movies) set in a Middle East war zone. I’m looking forward to this one.

UPDATED: Lamar Alexander’s get-tough strategy
He’s decided to get tough with the Democrats on this issue of lon-unapproved TVA nominees (including Knoxvillian Susan Williams) by blocking an appoinyment to something called “The Institute of Peace” (can anyone tell me what that is?)
Alexander has blocked an appointment to the Institute of Peace in an attempt to force Reid to allow reappointment [...]

Usher wants to be the poster child for African American dads
Hip hop performer Usher is apparently a new father, and he’s got something to say to other black dads:
Usher also credited (his wife) Tameka for making him the man he is today and for her help is raising their son.
She’s built up, the foundation of who I am. I want to see more men standing [...]
