Gas? Or golf?

Apparently more folks are choosing gas and food over a day on the links. (At the links? My golf jargonese is limited…)

Anecdotal and statistical data show the tough economic times have fewer people playing golf.

That’s a concern with the Stanford St. Jude Championship coming up in Memphis.

Greg Hines is director of golf at Windyke Country Club and he says acquaintances he talks with about joining say times are tough and they’re working hard to stay afloat.

Hines told The Commercial Appeal says the golf industry is hurting because fewer people have as much free time and disposable income as they used to have.

Studies by industry groups show overall participation in golf was off 5.8 percent last year and golfers who shot at least eight rounds per year dropped from 17.7 million in 2000 to 15 million in 2006.
