Damning David Davis with faint praise
David Oatney makes the case for re-electing First Congressional District incumbent Rep. David Davis by essentially saying there is no good reason NOT to re-elect him:
Perhaps the vantage point from Rogersville is a bit different than it is here, but I’m not sure where it is that Angelia is getting her insinuation that Davis hasn’t been on the stump-it seems to be all he has done when coming home for months on end. David Davis has been everywhere to be seen, and every federal grant award he could bring home to the district over the last year, he has done so with trumpeting fanfare. This is how we know David Davis is running for re-election. Further, Davis has become increasingly popular-or at least increasingly visible, in Morristown and Sevierville. Davis seems to be banking that the southern counties of the district will carry the election for him-and he may be right in that assumption.
Aside from David Davis’ much publicized dogfighting vote last year, neither Dr. Roe nor any of David Davis’ detractors have successfully presented the case from a conservative Republican perspective (this is a Republican Primary we are talking about, after all) why Davis should be removed from office. Davis has established a solidly conservative voting record, and had one in the General Assembly before going to Congress. In the case of the First District Primary, it isn’t so much that Phil Roe is a poor choice, but that an effective case against Davis from a conservative perspective can’t be made-David Davis is a conservative, and his views on issues such as taxes, immigration, abortion (and other social issues), national defense, and unfunded federal mandates are similar those of most of his constituents.
