I’m from Bell Buckle, TN (in Bedford County) and I keep up with happenings back home via my hometown newspaper, The Shelbyville Times Gazette.
Two items in the T-G caught my eye today. First, there’s a contest being run as a promotion by city of Shelbyville civic boosters (may need to get back home to enter this one):
If you’re better at the tall tale than the one-liner, there’s another contest. “The Story of my Redneck Family.” Storytellers will have 5 to 10 minutes to share their Jeff Foxworthy-style whopper illustrating just how ‘redneck’ their family is, and the audience will decide who gets the trophies.
“They can come in costume, if they want,’ said Cannon. “And they can bring safe props.”
Then there’s this week’s crime blotter, with these heinous criminal acts reported around the county:
- A rock-tossing burglar grabbed vodka and ran early Sunday after smashing a window at Economy Liquors, Madison Street, Shelbyville police report.
Surveillance video obtained by officers shows the man, wearing gloves and a red hooded sweatshirt covering his face, threw a rock through the window and took a bottle of Burnett’s Blueberry Vodka valued at $6.99.
- At least one goat is stolen from property on Railroad Avenue nearly each weekend, the BCSD was told Sunday.
The property owner claimed he maintains his fencing too well for the goats to escape.
- A new, uninstalled front door was taken from inside a home being remodeled on Bugscuffle Road between Thursday and Saturday.
- The owner of an unoccupied home on Eighth Street in Bell Buckle says a wood burning stove, taken before Saturday, is the latest of multiple furnishings taken over the past two years.
Deputy L.J. Puckett said in his report only the bathtub remains.
I really do love small towns, especially wonderfully quirky small towns like these. Although I’m a Knoxville girl now, I do miss Bell Buckle.

I love that they have to specify “safe” prop. You know you’re a redneck if you have to be told to bring only “safe” props.
