I was born in Knoxville and have lived in the Knoxville area all my life. I've heard Knoxville called K Town and Big Orange Country. I've even heard it referred to it as Road Work Ahead a few times. However, I have never heard anyone refer to it as The Couch. No local calls it that. Thats just something made up by someone who needed some material.

It's a name Glock came up with because she needed an opening line for her piece.
"Journalists" do it all the time.

I never heard it, but it's kind of an apt description. I think my brother fell down between the seat cushions.

I have lived here my entire life and never heard that Knoxville was ever called "the couch". I think that those with allergies, asthma and lung problems might beg to differ. Knoxville ranked #9 in "Metropolitan Areas with the Worst Ozone Air Pollution" by the American Lung Association. Little has been done to clean it up. Comfortable like a couch? Maybe if you like sitting by the air filter all day.
I love my hometown and the people but just ask around about how comfortable your friends and neighbors are on "The Couch".
