Alison Glock, who has lived here off and on over the years, has a short travel piece about Knoxville in the New York Times today..
It’s a nice piece, and she offers shout-outs to some of our civic favorites, including Magpies Bakery, The Tomato Head, Crown and Goose Pub, and even the waterside park in Sequoyah Hills.
It also has a really great slideshow of photos from in and around K-town.
The story starts, however, with a statement alluding to a nickname for Knoxville I’ve never actually heard: “KNOXVILLE is often called “the couch” by the people who live there. It’s a place too unassuming to shout about but too comfortable to leave…”

Kudos to Shawn Poynter for the nice photos. Shawn lives and works in Knoxville, so it’s a great bonus.
First, congrats to Shawn Poynter for his photos running in the NYT. Second, I’ve lived here almost 20 years and have never called — nor heard another resident call — Knoxville “the couch.” Knox Vegas and K-Town, yes. The Couch? Not so much.
