Another Democrat throws his hat in the ring
Democrat Kenneth Eaton announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate yesterday with this letter:
A message to you and my fellow Tennesseans:
Today, I announce my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Tennessee.
I have lived in Tennessee for my entire life, and in recent years I have seen alarming changes happening to this great nation of ours: our government in the hands of greedy corporations who do not wish us well, our energy future in the hands of foreign nations who hate us, a mortgage crisis, inflation, failing schools, healthcare so expensive that most of us cannot afford it, and a war that affects all Americans with no realistic strategy and seemingly no end in sight.
Most of all, as I drive across our beautiful state, I see the loss of jobs in our small towns and cities from Bristol to Memphis. These jobs have been lost because American companies have sold out their own people for cheaper, less accomplished labor in other nations. In selling out their employees they have jeopardized the future of our country. Business is more than companies. Business is also customers. Without jobs, there are no customers. Without customers there is no prosperity. Without prosperity, there can be no democracy.
The more I thought about these changes, the more concerned I became. There are solutions to all these problems, but what can I do about them? Do I just sit still and run my own businesses while the America we all love fades away? I know many of you are worried about the future of our children, and the future of our nation. I’m like you. I’m worried too. So I decided to do something ambitious. I decided to run for the United States Senate.
You may ask who am I to think that I could take on such a challenge. I say to you America needs another ten thousand men and women like me. Regular folks who have made their way in life and now want to give something back to their country; people who are not afraid to tackle issues that the political professionals avoid; people who take their issues one at a time rather than nailing themselves to a party dogma just so they can get the support of the big campaign contributors.
We live in the greatest nation on earth and yet I see the need for new directions. Like you I know that things have gone terribly wrong, and I want to do my share to make them right. Like you I believe the past eight years have been a disaster for our country in so many ways. We hear the politicians and the pundits tell us how they are right and the other guys are wrong, and they say, “trust us!!” And you know most of them get their marching orders from big corporation lobbyists. And they tell us we need smaller government, yet they give us even bigger government. Well, how about this? We don’t need bigger or smaller government, we need better government. We need government that puts its citizens - not the big international corporations - first.
Don’t you want to see that happen? I do. It’s no use being cynical and saying that bad guys always win! Elect enough good guys and the bad guys will not win. I’m not afraid of the bad guys. And I’m not afraid to go to Washington to represent you, instead of them!
On the road to the senate primary over the next few weeks, you will hear my positions on all these issues and more, as I campaign around the state. I’ll tell you what I believe, and I’ll talk about solutions. In the great American tradition, you might find me talking to you in the courthouse square of your county. Please come and listen, and on August 7, come on out and vote. Tennessee - we can do better!
Most sincerely,
Kenneth Eaton
By the way, Eaton has a blog.
