Crime in and around K-town

Anthony Welsch breaks down the new numbers from the FBI:

What caught my eye was the number of murders. 27 compared to 18. That’s a pretty big jump for our mid-sized city, right? I guess to put it in context and be fair— Memphis had 129 in 2007. Chattanooga only 11.

Rape, robbery, and car thefts were up too, although the percentage increase is not nearly as significant as the murder numbers.

I think I’d like to take some of these farther and find out if there is a correlation between the percentage of a crime solved and the instances of it. Does a city with a high solved murder case rate have fewer murder cases per capita?

Some good news for us though—- the report says arson and assaults were down in K-Town.

Now, I haven’t talked with any of our local law enforcement here about this year’s but from what I’ve been told in other areas, the FBI tends to group a lot more crime in the “violent” category than local agencies. So, maybe it’s all to be taken with a grain of salt… but, it’s still interesting stuff.
