We would like to plan a trip out East to see the lightning bugs.
What time of year is a good time to see them?
Are they mostly in the Tennessee/Knoxville areas/
Thank you for the information.

Last nite my family went outside to catch lightning bugs and we were outside for about 1 hour and a half beginning about 9:30 and we did not see a single lightning bug. We ended up catching beetles, crickets, and spiders instead. Not as fun for me but it was for my 3 year old. We were in the West Knoxville area.

Has anyone seen both white and yellow lightning bugs in their area? We have noticed white lightning bugs that stay predominantly in the high branches of the trees here in Northern Virginia. Neither of us remember white bugs where we grew up in NY and Illinois. We also have yellow lightening bugs - which stay close to the ground. These are the ones we remembered from our youths.
Just wondering....

I am here in MI., and not only am I missing ligthnig bugs, but crickets, bees and frogs as well. These things are either not evident or greatly reduced in number. And in the metro Detroit area, we do not have a drought condition as one of the previous writers mentioned.

I looked again last night at 3:00 am when my dog had to be excused. There are definitely not as many as usual in my West Knox backyard. Maybe last year's drought has something to do with it.

Lightning bugs have been on the decline over the last 10 years due to heavier insecticide use & other chemicals.

Interesting that gets brought up because I haven't seen a single one in Memphis this year yet either. It didn't occur to me until I was back home in Paris (between Memphis and Nashville) last week and saw them. It's like they've fled the city(ies).
