Candidate sues over blogger’s insults

Memphis blogger Thaddeus Matthews is in hot water again. This is the same dude who snuck into a funeral home and then published graphic photos of a murder victim on his blog.

Here’s the latest brouhaha:

Williams filed a lawsuit against Matthews and Paul Mattila, the Democratic trustee candidate, alleging the two conspired to spread “knowingly false and malicious statements.”

He’s seeking $500,000 in damages and injunctive relief.

The lawsuit also suggests the controversial blogger’s opinions can be bought.

Like a number of local candidates, including Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton and U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), Mattila has purchased ad space on Matthew’s blog.

And in a phone conversation that Williams says was recorded between one of his associates and Matthews — an apparent transcript of which was included with the lawsuit — Matthews agrees to quit smearing Williams if he pays $5,000 for advertising on his radio show and blog.

“Uh, if he pays, damn, I’m out of it, I’m out of the race all together,” Matthews is quoted as saying.

Gee, what a fine fella.
