A Knoxville question for you

Posted By katie allison granju

This one is a three-parter:

-What do you like and dislike about your own Knoxville neighborhood? If you could wave a magic wand and change one thing about your ‘hood, what would it be?

-If you were to move to a different Knoxville neighborhood - and you could choose any one - which one would it be and why?

-What neighborhood in Knoxville would you find LEAST attractive as a place to call home. Why?

  1. OK - Here are my answers:

-I live in the Old North Knoxville/4th and Gill neighborhood. I love the beautiful old houses. I love that neighbors sit on their porches and visit with one another. I am thrilled to have sidewalks that actually GO somewhere throughout the neighborhood. I like being right near downtown, and I like the greenway.

If I could change one thing about my neighborhood, it would be to make it safer - I’d change the conditions that seem to attract excessive property crime and litter into the neighborhood.

-If I could live in any other neighborhood, it would be Sequoyah Hills. I love that SH is a real neighborhood, with close proximity to neighbors, schools, shopping and Downtown. The river and park are wonderful, too.

-I would least like to live in a subdivision in the Cedar Bluff/Lovell Road area. Just not my cup of tea.

    Katie,
I am in the process of renovating a home in North Hills. My husband and I have recently moved from 4th and Gill. We chose North Hills for several reasons: honest to goodness neighborhood, proximity to downtown, quirky houses of a certain age with porches (no knox boxes here), beautiful yards/gardens. Having not actually moved into North Hills yet, I really can’t comment on changes. I just hope it is as neighborly as 4th and Gill (but the property crime, vagrants and prostitutes I can do without.) If we were to move again (oh Lord please no), I would head to Bearden/Sequoyah for exactly the same amenities you stated. A cattle prod could not get me to move west of Bearden. Can’t stand the sprawl.

I live in Corryton, which is out in East Knox Co (not to be confused with East Knoxville). I love the farmland, the view of House Mountain, the creeks, ponds, railroad tracks, barns, silos, and churches. Neighbors are kind and peaceful.

If I could change anything it would be the minds of all of the city folks that keep moving into my neck of the woods and destroying all of the above mentioned things. Subdivisions are starting to ruin our area.

If I had to move to any other area and still stay within the confines of Knox large, my choice would be somewhere on the outer edge of Mascot, as close to the Grainger Co. line as I could get.

One place I would not want to live is anywhere in the Magnolia Ave. area.

I live on Washington Pike close to Broadway, in what is technically Coker Addition but most people probably lump in as part of the Whittle Springs area.

I love that we could afford to buy a 119-year-old big Queen Anne home in this neighborhood. I love the sidewalks and that we can walk to the library, the park, the elementary school, restaurants, and the bus stop. I want my children to grow up in a neighborhood where not everyone looks the same and where they see every day people who are less fortunate so that they grow up knowing that the poor and homeless are just people like the rest of us; I like living somewhere where I can’t put social problems conveniently out of sight and out of mind. It does seem like crime is up in this general area lately, though. More street lights would be nice too, :-)

I would love to live in Old North or Fourth and Gill for the beautiful old homes and because they seem to have a lot of what I like about my own neighborhood plus more of a community. I would also live in Sequoyah Hills just because it is so beautiful there.

I would not go farther west either because of the traffic and all the shopping centers, etc. I would not live in any neighborhood that was obviously a big field just a few years ago and is now covered with basically identical houses.

  5. - I live in the county in Hardin Valley and it would be great if the county would infuse more funds into making the roads safer, wider, and lay down side walks.

    - I like Sequoyah Hills - lots of character in the homes, lots of trees. There is a more urban feel to it, and I like that.

Not a big fan of North Knoxville.

You’re painting with a pretty broad stroke there, aren’t you? There’s a large variety of neighborhoods in that area. Many cookie cutter ones for sure, but also some older established ones with character. Gulf park, for instance.

  7. Nah, even Gulf Park wouldn’t be my thing - which doesn’t mean it isn’t an awesome spot to live…just not for me.

I live in Island Home Park in south Knoxville. Lovely old neighborhood; great early 20th century architecture; mature trees; connected by greenway to Ijams; 2.5 miles from downtown; on the bus route; friendly neighbors; low crime. What’s not to like?

The only thing I would change about our neighborhood would be to strenthen the elementary school we’re zoned for. We lose too many young parents when their kids start school.

I honestly think I live in the best neighborhood in Knoxville so I hope I never have to pick another one. If I did, I’d probably look for some place in Bearden like Westwood.

Like Katie, I wouldn’t go west. I lived out there for 15 years, and have no desire to go back. It is my firm belief that there’s a sign atop Bearden Hill reading “here be dragons.”
