Sexual temptation and purity

Posted By katie allison granju

The Parkridge neighborhood, one of the wonderful historic East Knoxville communities now experiencing a renaissance, was the subject of a prostitution sting last week. Residents were thrilled, as they have been actively working with KPD to try to get the johns trolling their neighborhood to go away.

The names and addresses of those arrested for solicitation have been posted on the Parkridge neighborhood e-mail list, and in an amusing twist, one of the men’s occupation is “a counselor for “Christian Accountability Groups for Men Struggling with Sexual Temptation and
Purity”

You can’t make this stuff up.

If there are any prostitutes that resemble Bill Clinton, I bet they know Jim!

If you want my attention this badly, contact me directly…have enough respect for our hostess and your fellow readers to leave off publicly embarassing yourself here trying to get it through the comments….

I want to clarify that the stings took place in Old North, Downtown, and Holston Hills–outside the Parkridge area. Eight women were arrested in Downtown, Old North, and near Holston Hills, and five men were arrested near Holston Hills.

This blog entry identifies Parkridge as the “subject of a prostitution sting.” I’m not sure what this means, but I want to clarify that none of the prostitution was actually found in Parkridge. The prostitution was found elsewhere and REPORTED TO Parkridge residents. A Parkridge resident researching the five alleged johns found that two are from West Knoxville; research on the other three is incomplete.

While it’s true that three Parkridge residents have reported seeing drive-by johns this summer, and I saw two myself in Parkridge 15 years ago, there are drive-by johns trolling YOUR neighborhoods too. There is no reason to identify Parkridge specifically when all the inner-city neighborhoods have such serious issues with prostitution and vagrancy — Fourth-and-Gill and Old North way worse than Parkridge. So why not mention every inner-city neighborhood?

Cedar Bluff has prostitution, Turkey creek has vagrancy, and both are showing up near interstate ramps in all kinds of neighborhoods. So why not mention every part of town when discussing vagrancy and prostitution? It seems that we only read and hear Parkridge, Park City, and East Knoxville associated with crimes that are everywhere. That’s how a handful of Parkridge activists got involved. We’re tired of it.

I hope everyone in Knoxville will support this effort and become a part of it. And publicize Parkridge as what it is — a mostly crime-free neighborhood where activist residents are helping you fight your crime battles.

  4. I apologize if I misunderstood exactly where the sting took place. The info, however, was posted on the Parkridge Neighborhood e-mail list.

In no way did I imply or would I imply that other neighborhoods in Knoxville do not have prostitution problems.

What is on the Parkridge neighborhood e-mail list is the news that northside and eastside prostitution seems to be concentrated in the Broadway and Asheville Highway areas, where stings have recently taken place. These areas are to the north and east of Parkridge, not IN Parkridge.

You also could have read on our site that, according to our police patrol, there is almost no crime in Parkridge. So we are not sure why you mentioned Parkidge at all in connection with this crime. It’s true that drive-by johns have cut through Parkridge and bothered my friends–four times now this year. The unwanted visitors seem to be on their way back and forth between the crime hotspots in the Broadway and Asheville Highway areas.

The only connection these stings have with Parkridge is that Parkridge activists are following the court cases and are planning to publicize names of the offenders who are damaging the reputations of the north and east sides of town.

Our activism is our story, and we are still discussing how and whether we want to publicize our part it. And there is so much else we’d rather publicize. It’s on our website:
