Suffice it to say…

Posted By katie allison granju

…that I am exhausted tonight - mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Covering this story today was very difficult for me, but it really only hit me with full force after I left the newsroom and came home.

As a longtime, on-and off-again attendee of the church, I’ve spent many hours in that peaceful sanctuary with that group of remarkably loving, kind people. And I have numerous friends - dozens - who are members.

I am so struck by the stark bravery of the men who tackled the gunmen and held him until police arrived. I keep asking myself whether I - faced with the same situation - would have been courageous enough to do what they did. It’s a question I cannot answer.

My prayers are with the congregation, the families of the victims, and with Rev. Chris Buice, who must now minister to his wounded congregation as they make their way through this terrible time - a situation he likely never envisioned in his worst nightmares.

Katie my prayers are with the injured and and the families of the ones we lost and all the members of the church.

    the sheepdog theroy ,
thier are wolves sheeps and sheepdogs
On the issue of what you would do in this situation its hard to tell everyone reacts diffently. The guys are gals that took the bad guy down are the sheepdogs of are society that keep the wolves away from the sheep. The sheep make up about 98 % of are society. So you can see the sheepdogs ( the guys or gals at the church yesterday , police , military , etc…) have a big job keeping the wolves at bay day and night

My heart is broken. My heart is bursting for this congregation and even for the shooter as well. I visited TVUUC last year and, for all I know, I was greeted by one victim and served coffee by another. I want to say more, but I think I’ll keep quiet until more facts come in.

Same here. I have not had an opportunity to catch any news shows or read any newspapers this morning. The thing that interests me the most right now is the motive for the shooting. I am wondering if this was yet another Christian conservative taking his ideological cue from the Southern Baptist Convention, The 700 Club, and other such sources—and deciding personally to go after the “liberals” to deal them the righteous justice that they he believed (and so very, very, very many other people in our society believe) that such people so richly deserve. If that turns out to be the case, I hope this tragedy will cause those people to stop for just a brief moment in their busy lives and ask themselves whether they too were accessories to this crime by virtue of their persistently hateful rhetoric that stretches from one end of American media to the others these days.

Ditto what Doug McD said. Your updates on WBIR.com were by far the best (and sometimes only) bits of real information available on the ‘net.

    Kudos on an excellent job.

Yes, Aulder Guy, apparently, he listened to the voices on the radio and went after the liberals.

Except for the fact that there’s no proof nor factual statement that he listened to any “voices on the radio”…just a bunch of suppositions from people who already had their mind made up about the facts before any actually went public.

Aulder guy this may be some poor guy who as been tossed out in the street because we don’t have enough money to deal with are mental heatlh issues in this country, because of the liberal driven issues of drug abuse and homelessness with are a life style choice in 85 % of all cases but the liberals insist on throwing money at it reguardless of the cost and results… that it has on the people, that have real mental issues like this man. You would rather spew some anti bush hate speech right wing crap out there instead of solutions to the problems. I don’t know about you but my conservative values have tought me in a time like this to pray for the victims and thier souls , thier families, the injured members of the church, the man who did this and his family, and brave men and women who had the couage who stood up and stopped this evil. I did not stop and ask it they right are left wing ?????

    Katie,
You wonder “whether you would have been courageous enough –”
We should all ask ourselves that and be ready to help our neighbors.
But knowing a little about you, I know you have the courage — you’ve already shown it.

Best wishes, and thanks for the blog.
